Committee of Scientists (COS) & Scientific Coordinating Committee (SCC)

The COS consists of principal investigators conducting research at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. The COS gathers during quarterly project meetings and the Annual Cooperator’s Meeting, which are open to all.

Overall expectations for COS membership consist of long-term and sustained research at Hubbard Brook and contributions to the community.

Most COS members are scientists with Ph.D.s or equivalent experience in other disciplines (outreach, education, art), in established positions with capacity to serve as Principal Investigator.

Members generally participate in several of the following activities:

  • Active research at Hubbard Brook spanning several years
  • Regular attendance at the annual cooperators’ meeting
  • Engagement at the quarterly project meetings
  • Voting on SCC elections and proposed policy changes
  • Participation in project business, such as participation on other HBES committees (such as Education, DEI, Data Management, Archives).

Potential new members can (1) be nominated by any current member of the COS, or (2) self-nominate. Nomination can occur at any time, for consideration at a monthly SCC meeting. Nominations can be sent to any member of the SCC, and should include:

  1. A short statement of interest in participation on the COS and a short description (few sentences) of past and anticipated HBES activities over the next several years
  2. A short summary of their background and current position (i.e., an existing short CV or other similar summary)
  3. A statement of willingness to adhere by the HBES Code of Conduct

The SCC votes on nominations. If you are a member of COS and your name is missing from the list, please email the information manager: hbr-im@lternet.edu.

The SCC provides leadership for the COS and meets monthly. Nominations and voting for elected members of the SCC take place among the COS once per year.
