Research Interests
I am broadly interested in the influence of substrate, including soils, geologic parent-materials, landforms, and water, on the structure and function of ecosystems. Current research includes (1) watershed mass balance and retrospective soil monitoring to determine temporal dynamics of forest soil chemistry, (2) mineral weathering in forest soils and watersheds, (3) feedbacks between soil development and hillslope hydrology (hydropedology), and (4) the role of seepage and fractured-rock groundwater discharge as hot spots in nutrient cycling and biodiversity. Current projects range in location from the Catskill Mountains in New York to the Chic-Choc Mountains in Quebec, with a special emphasis on the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest.
