Our interest in HBEF is in understanding microbial responses to climate change in high-latitude forest ecosystems. Our work at HBEF centers around a manipulative field experiment – the Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) – which examines how the interactive effects of climate warming in the growing season and soil freeze/thaw cycles in winter affect ecosystem function and structure through measurements of photosynthesis, C and N cycling, and decomposition processes in soil. Our research aims to connect these biogeochemical processes with the microbial species that drive them through the use of high-throughput DNA sequencing, metatranscriptomics, and culture-based studies of microbes isolated from CCASE soils.
