ABSTRACT:
Overstory foliage is collected in late summer from reference forest to the west of W6, coinciding with the fine litterfall plots. Nutrient concentrations in foliage are measured. This allows us to estimate the pool of nutrients in foliage in combination with litterfall estimates of foliage biomass. It also allows us to estimate nutrient retranslocation, in combination with periodic measurements of leaf litterfall chemistry. Long-term measurements continue with the aim of detecting trends in foliage chemistry over long time scales.

FIELD PROCEDURES
The samples were collected by climbing the trees and taking leaves from the upper canopy for each species and elevation. Samples were obtained from one tree. Sampled trees are not consistent from year to year.
Samples were collected from 5 different sites within or adjacent to Watershed 6:
1. Spruce-fir zone - Just outside (north) of upper boundary of WS6, between this boundary and the Weasel Trail.
2. High zone - West of rain gauge 9
3. Upper zone - West of Weasel Trail about 100 meters above middle rain gauge clearing. Samples from trees between the trail and the now-removed meterologic tower site and seep.
4. Mid zone - West of Weasel Trail and west of throughfall collector sites
5. Low zone - Southwest of WS6 weir, west of now-removed bird tower platform
LABORATORY PROCEDURES
Following collection, leaf samples are oven dried at 60-70 degrees Celsius until thoroughly dry. Samples are then ground in an electric coffee/spice mill, and stored in glass vials or 4 oz. jars. Samples are dried again in jars with caps loosened for 24 hours at 80 degrees Celsius before chemical analysis. For determination of organic content and chemical analysis, a 0.3 g sample of the oven dry ground material was placed in a pre-weighed crucible and ashed overnight at 450-500 degrees C. The ashed material was cooled and weighed. The ash was eluted with 10 ml of 6N HNO3 and heated for a few minutes (to a simmer) on a hot plate. The hot extract solution was poured filtered (Whatmann # 41 ashless) in a funnel and into a 50 ml volumetric flask. The crucible and the material on the filter paper were rinsed several times with distilled deionized water. Following these several rinsings, the volume in the flask was brought up to 50 ml with the distilled deionized water. The 50 ml of extract solution was then placed in 60 ml plastic bottles for storage until chemical analysis. The elements Ca, Mg, K, P, and Mn were determined for each sample using an ICP spectrometer. Carbon and nitrogen were determined on oven-dried material using a CHN analyzer.
CALCULATIONS
Data is presented as elemental concentrations on a dry weight basis.
